This is a year to remember. Stuck at home, I have been able to attend those conferences and classes on Genealogy that I have dreamed of attending, but because of finances or conflicts have not been able to in the past. No travel expenses or hotel costs, just for the conference itself. I had already signed up to attend the National Genealogy Conference, which this year was to be in Salt Lake. I was excited to be able to go to the library there to do research as well. When it was decided to host it virtually, I cancelled my hotel reservations and signed up for online classes. During May, I attended classes sometimes live and the rest virtually at my leisure. This year, I wanted to concentrate on learning more about using DNA in genealogy research. My head was exploding with so much information it was hard to digest it all. Then in June, the SLIG that was to be for a full week in Athens GA, was also turned into a virtual classroom. It was live too partially with the majority on demand. We also had homework to help us learn what we were learning. Mark Lowe, nationally recognized Genealogist and lecturer, was our wonderful teacher on learning about Southern research. September brought the final Federation on Genealogical Society Conference into our living rooms. Again it was both live and on demand. So as much as staying home has been difficult, the best part of this pandemic has been the opportunity to Zoom and attend classes with an ease that makes this time much more bearable. Also so much more information has been put online that it makes going to Archives and Libraries a thing of the past. There is still so much that is not online, but it’s getting to be more and more every day, and it’s hard to keep up with it. So many organizations have offered free online classes that I have kept busy the whole time time learning as much as I can. So truthfully I can say that this has been a special year and lots of good has come out of it.
